Drivers, be cautious of red lights. Hundreds of new red light cameras are being installed across the five boroughs.
Although it feels like there are many cameras, they’re currently only at 1% of intersections, including here at 66th and Third Avenue. If you run a red light, you’ll get a ticket in the mail.
The city and state are increasing cameras to 5%, covering about 600 intersections. Supporters say this reduces red light running and crashes, while critics argue it’s a revenue-generating scheme.
Since the program started 30 years ago, red light running has dropped by over 70%, proving its effectiveness. Critics, however, think adding points to licenses would be more effective.
Supporters cite alarming statistics: in 2023, 29 deaths were linked to running red lights in NYC, more than double the previous decade’s average.
Here at 66th and Third, you can see one of these cameras. Intersections with cameras have seen 73% fewer violations since 1994. While some suspect this relates to congestion pricing, this plan has been long in the works.
