One April afternoon in a remote Kamchatka village, word spread of an unusual sighting: a wild polar bear on the coast. Normally found in the Arctic, this bear’s presence puzzled the villagers. The bear had likely been stranded on an ice floe that broke away from the mainland, beginning an adventure that brought it 700 kilometers south.
Hungry and weak, the bear wandered into the village, finally resting by the police station. The officers, shocked by the bear’s size and its injured paw, contacted wildlife authorities. They treated the bear and named it “Umka,” quickly becoming a local celebrity.
The villagers fed Umka, but it was clear he needed to return home. Experts determined that the bear couldn’t survive in Kamchatka. With the governor’s intervention, a plan was devised to transport Umka back to the Arctic by helicopter.
After eight days, Umka was sedated and loaded into a specially made cage. During the flight, he woke up, causing anxiety among the crew. However, Umka remained calm. Upon landing, the bear hesitated, then ran into the wild, successfully back home.
